Residents urged to speak up over housing plans
CHESHAM residents have been told to bombard Chiltern District Council with their views about plans to build 650 homes in the town by 2026.
More than 100 people packed in the town hall on Monday night (15/3) for the meeting, hosted by Chesham Town Council, to give them the chance to quiz councillors over the proposed housing plan which was announced last week.
Government housing targets mean CDC has to find room for 2,900 homes in the district over the next 20 years.
They have proposed that Chesham take 650 of them with two key sites identified for them being the former hospital site, in Hospital Hill, and Amersham & Wycombe College site, in Lycrome Road.
A further 92 sites have been earmarked for construction with many sited on current Green Belt or Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
The district council have opened them up to public consultation until April 23 and all present at the meeting were urged to have their say before it is too late.
Councillor Jane Bramwell (Lib Dem) said: "This will change the shape of Chesham over the next 20 to 30 years to it is vitally important that everyone gets involved.
"We can not emphasise the importance of every resident sending in their views and comments on where the houses should or should not go."
The meeting was told that if Chesham residents did not speak up then they could be left to bear the brunt of the housing with fellow towns and villages, including Chalfont St Peter, being increasingly vocal against their own allocation.
Councillor Alan Bacon (Lib Dem) said: "Chalfont St Peter are working very hard to make sure they have their voices heard and we have to make sure we do the same."
Councillor Michael Brand (Lib Dem) said: "The last thing we want is to be derailed by a village like Chalfont St Peter who fight to get their allocation lowered which then gets shifted over to us."
A number of residents at the meeting raised concerns about traffic congestion, increased pollution and the type of housing that will be built.
One woman said: "If we are all going to have to suffer this heartache then they should make sure the houses are affordable for people in the town and not for people coming in from London on higher wages."
