The Bull to remain a pub
PLANS to turn a Bellingdon pub into a two-bedroom cottage were rejected outright by the planning authority after over-whelming anger from the local community.
Fortitude Investments Ltd, owners of The Bull, in Chesham Road, submitted a planning application to Chiltern District Council last month which would have allowed them to knock-down the pub and build a residential home instead.
This is after they had plans to extend the closed pub rejected previously and was met with widespread fury from local residents.
Stefan Gryko, spoke on behalf of them at the council's latest planning meeting on Thursday (28/1), in a plea for councillors to reject the proposals.
He said: "I have the endorsed backing of 110 residents that feel this is a very important community facility and it hugely supported by villagers."
In their application, Fortitude had claimed the pub could not become a profitable business and that there were other pubs in the vicinity.
Mr Gryko said: "I would suggest that they have never even visited the site because they say residents can walk to other pubs. But the alternative routes they suggest are bridlepaths and uneven surfaces and pitch black.
"Also, this pub was thriving under previous ownership just six months ago. If it was run properly then it could be again."
Councillor Nick Rose (Con) said: "The support from the local community for this pub has been over-whelming. The suggestion that people could get to other pub's is simply a joke.
"This company have not done their homework and they need to engage with the community and come back with an extension plan that works."
Councillor Robert Burns-Green (Con) said: "After we rejected the previous extension we all expected to be ruling a smaller extension when the company submitted their next application.
"So we were all shocked when plans to change the building completely came in."
All 12 committee members voted to reject the plans.
Richard Berkley, spokesman for Fortitude, said: "The application for change of use to a residential property was the only option left open to Fortitude by the Local Authority. Such planning, if it were granted, would never produce a profit for Fortitude
"Fortitude has done all within its powers to keep The Bull open and create a vibrant village Pub. If The Bull remains closed, as now seems inevitable, the Villagers should look to the local authority for an explanation, not Fortitude."
