Dog hotel owners slam council
A FAMILY run business have accused Chiltern District Council of having a vendetta against them after they saw a third planning application at their prestigious dog hotel turned down.
Elmwood Exclusive Hotel for Dogs, in Swan Bottom, Great Missenden, is run by John Burton, 70, his wife Jen and son Mark, where owners can leave their pets for months at a time.
Canine guests can enjoy champagne for breakfast, steak dinners, and the chance to sleep in beds and listen to the radio.
In May 2009, the won a five year planning battle with the council after they rejected their plans to build a new Pooch Palace for guests.
The wrangle was over a suitable hedge around the property and after a successful appeal to the Planning Inspectorate the Burton family were given approval.
But they have been enraged once again after the council rejected their latest application for a roof extension.
Mr Burton said: "I do not know if the council has some sort of vendetta against us because we won our previous appeal against them but this is ridiculous.
"We will be appealing again and am confident we will win again. We are unable to start using the Pooch Palace until we get this permission and are losing business and there are people who are unable to work.
"These appeals are a waste of taxpayers by the council who seem to just want to be stubborn. When they are planning on building thousands of homes on Green Belt, surely a roof extension, which is not visible to passers-by, is no big deal."
Elmwood is only one of a handful of exclusive hotels for dogs in the UK, has visitors from across the world and has had mass media coverage over the years including CNN cameras filming on the site.
A CDC spokesman said: "The council has no vendetta against Mr Burton, and he is aware that the site of the dog kennels lies within the open Green Belt.
"His proposal is classed as inappropriate development, and as with all proposals for inappropriate development in the Green Belt, it is necessary for the applicant to provide written justification in support of the proposal.
"Mr Burton is aware of this through his previous planning applications in respect of the dog kennels on this site. However, very little information was submitted by Mr Burton as part of this application, and the information was not sufficient to outweigh the harm arising from the inappropriate development in the Green Belt.
"As such, the planning application was refused planning permission. Mr Burton has the option to resubmit the planning application, providing greater information in support of the proposal, or lodging an appeal against the Council's decision."
