Labour election hopeful 'up for challenge'

THE Labour Party have unveiled their candidate for the Amersham and Chesham seat at the General Election who has vowed to challenge what he has described as Tory 'complacency' in the district.
Anthony Gajadharsingh, 43, came through a rigorous selection process after putting himself forward for the position last year and is relishing the challenge of competing in a traditionally 'safe' Conservative seat.

Mr Gajadharsingh, who works as chief of staff for a multi-national technology company, lives with his civil partner and both his mother and brother live in Amersham.
His previous jobs include assistant company secretary for London Electricity plc, managing director of a start-up electricity metering business, and head of strategy for a Chicago based manufacturing company.
He said: "I have been a supporter of the party for a number of years but all I had done was give money. It was time for me to put my body where my money is and make the step up.
"I have been in and around the Chilterns for 25 years and spent my childhood walking around the Chiltern Hills.
"It is great to have been selected for an area where my family live and which I know very well. My business background gives me a good understanding of the issues and solutions we need to deal with the budget deficit and economic recession."
But breaking the Tory monopoly in Amersham and Chesham will be a daunting task for Mr Gajadharsingh and he will have to dislodge shadow Welsh Secretary Cheryl Gillan who has held the seat since 1992.
He said: "I am under no illusions about the task ahead. In the last election we came third in Amersham and Chesham behind Conservatives and Lib Dem.
"My plan is to get involved in the community as much as possible and try to show people the complacent attitude of the Tories in the area and give them a counter argument to deal with.
"Whilst being a supporter of core Labour principles, I have never been part of the party's establishment. I am independent-minded and a free-thinker and I believe this is the kind of politics we need.
"I look forward to working with the constituents of Chesham and Amersham, listening to their concerns, and pursuing policies to uplift the local community.
"And I invite residents to contact me regarding any problems or issues that they would like me to assist them with."

Anthony - 'Snowball in Hell's chance - Gajadharsingh will be about as popular locally as Gordon Brown is nationally. Perhaps they can form a double act after the Election.
