Fury over Post Office snub
POST Office officials pulled out of a public meeting to discuss the future of the Chesham site leaving the 180 people who turned out seething on Wednesday night (20/1).
A representative from the company had agreed to attend the meeting at the town hall on Wednesday night but emailed organiser and town mayor Justine Fulford at 1pm to say the risk of snow meant they could not travel.
Mrs Fulford read out their email amid cries of 'pathetic' and 'not good enough' from fuming residents who had packed out the town hall with some forced to stand in the foyer and in the kitchen to listen.
The Post Office in High Street closed suddenly in November leaving hundreds of residents unable to post letters or collect pensions and benefits without travelling up Hivings Hill to Greenway.
They have proposed to transfer a portakabin from Marlow to use as a temporary solution but that could take four to six weeks to arrive.
Mrs Fulford said: "The sensible solution is for the service to be re-instated to 81 High Street and for a new leaseholder to be found. I have been working very hard throughout to the get that to happen.
"There seems to be a collective will to get this to happen but for business reasons which I can't divulge it has stalled."
Richard Hut, the agent for the current freeholder, told the meeting that was close saying: "About a week ago, we thought we had agreed terms. I have been pressing the Post Office in the past week but they have yet to confirm the terms of the agreement.
"We are not so far apart that it should be a material issue, but the difference is fairly nominal given the inconvenience the closure has caused."
Deputy mayor Jane Bramwell said the town council is considering bidding to become the new licensee of the site and had been told that they could not host a temporary facility at the town hall for security reasons.
Fuming residents slammed the Post Office's handling of the closure. Tessa Sear, 77, of Cavendish Road, said: "It has been extremely difficult for me to get out to Greenway because of the huge hill and the snow and ice didn't help.
"They have just told us lie after lie and I feel they have no intention of bringing a Post Office back to Chesham."
Guy Simer said: "We need a Post Office. I know were just Bucks and little old Chesham but it is a terrible slur and insult to the people of the town that they could pull out of this meeting.
"It is also terribly insulting when you hear the laughable excuse they have used."
Councillor Mimi Harker, Chiltern District Council cabinet member for community, young people and communications, said: "Justine has worked so hard to get this meeting together and you only need to look around the room to see how much feeling there is in the town.
"For the Post Office to pull out like this unacceptable. The bottom line is that Chesham can not operate without a Post Office."
Cllr Fulford said another meeting will be held on February 1 from 7pm with a venue to be announced nearer the time.
Meanwhile, residents are being urged to bombard the Post Office with complaint. You can write to Customer Service Centre, PO Box 740, Brampton, Barnsley. S73 0ZJ. Email customercare@postoffice.co.uk or call 0845 7223344.

Just typical, they really seem to be on a self destruct mission.Their strikes and closures have already annoyed the public.Funny how the royal mail vans got up Greenway Hill in Chesham every day we had heavy snow fall.
