Campaigners vow to fight to keep Bull alive

DETERMINED Bellingdon residents have vowed to fight to stop their local pub being torn down by property developers.
More than 100 people piled into Bellingdon Village Hall, in Chesham Road, on Friday night (15/1) after a public meeting was called to discuss the future of The Bull just yards down the road.

The pub is owned by Fortitude Investments Ltd who have seen two applications to extend the pub rejected by Chiltern District Council after claiming they were too large.
Fortitude say an extension for a restaurant within the pub is the only way to make the it a profitable business and they have now submitted an application to change the licence of the site from a pub to a residential dwelling.
This has caused uproar within the village with all at the meeting vowing to write to CDC and object to the plans.
Stefan Gryko, chair of the meeting, said: "We were hoping Fortitude would put in a better planning application for an extension so this has come as a surprise to us all.
"The overwhelming consensus at this meeting is that people support the pub being re-opened and small extension built and are deeply against changing the licence."
Simon Pegg, of Bellingdon Parish Council, said: "This company has not engaged with the local population enough. The council does not support losing this public facility."
John Conlan, said: "The local community is very keen to keep the pub alive and we are very sceptical about the companies intentions for the site. We believe that they may have had this in mind when they bought the site initially."
Richard Berkley, spokesman for Fortitude Investments, said: "We had to put in this planning application because we had no choice. It was suggested that we could go back with another application but it was made very clear that it would not be approved unless it was drastically reduced.
"We tried to come up with a solution. If we get approval we are not planning to build houses it would be a small two-bedroom cottage.
"We are not a big developer looking to build big. We are not even going to recover our investment."
Some residents raised the issue of the village rallying together to raise the £650,000 to buy back the pub and will elect a representative from the group to address the council planning committee when it decides on the application on January 28.
