Report into Bucks sex offender numbers released

Posted by Greg Burns on Oct 27, 09 02:04 PM in People

A REPORT into the number of sex offenders living in Thames Valley show that on one day in March this year there were 158 registered offenders living in Bucks.
Thames Valley Police, Thames Valley Probation, and the Prison Service regularly assess and manage the risk posed by sex offenders living within communities.
For eight years they have published a MAAPA report which this year has seen them make a 'snapshot' calculation - this year on March 31.

On that day there were 1,038 offenders in Thames Valley and the force had applied for 37 Sexual Offences Prevention Orders.
The report states: "We appreciate people's concerns about the idea of potentially dangerous people living in local communities.
"It is important to note that most sex offenders, between 80 and 90 per cent, are known to their victims and they are often related.
"We would ask everyone to be vigilant, act responsibly, and report any suspicions.
"We cannot completely eliminate the risk that certain individuals may pose but, as these figures demonstrate, we can reduce the risks through joint working, careful assessment, supervision and monitoring."
Detective Superintendent Claire Stevens, Head of the Protecting Vulnerable People Strategy Unit for Thames Valley Police said: "Each Basic Command Unit (BCU) in Thames Valley Police has a Protecting Vulnerable People Unit, with dedicated Public Protection staff who monitor sex offenders on a day to day basis.
"I am very proud of our dynamic and professional teams, who work so hard to reduce the risk presented by those who come within the MAPPA process. Thames Valley has a good record for the management of these offenders."
