Pick up your litter - or face fine up to £75
FINES for graffiti, littering, and dog fouling are set to be introduced in the Chilterns next week.
Thames Valley Police and Chiltern District Council will begin the scheme on Sunday but will issued warning, instead of fines for the first month.
After that, however, fixed penalty notices ranging from fines of £50 to £75 - depending on how severe the offence is - will be issued by police community support officers or council staff.
Councillor Noel Brown, cabinet member for environmental health, said: "We know that the majority of our residents don't like seeing litter, graffiti, or dogs fouling footpaths but where it does happen we want to nip it in the bud.
"The council is not adopting a zero tolerance policy but it wants to tackle the problems caused by the few individuals that persist in spoiling our streets and open spaces for others."
Penalty notices are not criminal convictions but failure to pay could result in higher fines or imprisonment.
When young people aged between 10 and 18 are caught doing graffiti, littering or allowing their dog to foul, their parents and the Youth Offending Service will be informed before a fine is issued.
