Mum thanks disabled swimmer for coming to the rescue
A MOTHER has praised the efforts of a disabled swimmer after she saved the lives of both her and her son while in a pool.
Mum-of-two Sandra Parsons, 40, of Grays Walk, Chesham, got into problems during a swimming session with her 12-year-old son Harry at Chesham Leisure Centre.
The pair were swimming at the centre in White Hill when Harry, who is autistic and has severe learning difficulties, lost hold of his float and took hold of his mother, pulling her under.
But Helen Church, 39, who uses a mobility scooter to get around, was nearby in the pool, and came to the rescue. She pulled Harry free and to safety at the side of the pool.
Mrs Parsons said: "Unfortunately Harry went out of his depth and pulled me under and I couldn't get back up again because he is quite big now and stronger than me. The whole thing happened so quickly and I was starting to think I'm not going to get up again. I didn't have chance to get any air as he pulled me under so quickly.
"Helen picked up really quickly I was struggling with him. The leisure centre were really good as well - they reacted very quickly and raised the alarm. But it was amazing what she did as she has problems with her legs. I cannot thank her enough for her quick thinking as she obviously realised in the nick of time that we were in trouble."
Ms Church, a mother-of-two of Lyndhurst Road, Chesham, said: "First of all I thought they were playing but as I swam past I saw she was in distress - Harry was holding her down and she was drowning. I shouted for the lifeguard and took hold of Harry so Sandra could bob back up.
"It all happened so quickly, it was a split second thing. We kept really calm and that was it really.
"She said if it hadn't of been for me it could have been a lot worse."
Mrs Parsons said Harry was 'oblivious' to the drama unfolding and has not been put off swimming by the near-death experience. She thanked Ms Church and has given her a card and present for her life-saving efforts.

What a lovely, dramatic, unexpected story. Thank goodness it had a happy ending, too.
