Work begins to tear down British Legion
A DEMOLITION company began taking down the charred Royal British Legion this week.
The historic building, which burnt down in a fire on May 18, saw contractors build scaffolding to secure the site while workmen begin the delicate process of bringing it down on Monday.
The work is expected to take several weeks and bosses of the Legion have vowed to rebuild their base at the same location once but have warned members it could not rise again until 2011.
A statement released by the charity after the fire said: "The Royal British Legion intends to rebuild, but it is estimated to be an 18 to 24 month project.
"During this period the welfare work, home and hospital visiting, the Poppy Appeal and Remembrance Day Parade and Service will continue as normal."
Peter Cleminson, National Chairman of the Royal British Legion, who lives in Chesham and used the club as his local, said: "It is an enormous tragedy but like a phoenix from the flames we will rise again. We will be looking to build again."
Neighbours to the site were forced to evacuate their homes when the fire broke out at 3.30am and it took more than 40 firefighters up to six hours to douse the inferno.
