Thieves target two more Chesham churches
TWO more churches in Chesham have become the targets of thieves this week - bringing the total this year to six.
Overnight of Saturday (22/8) and Sunday (23/8), St Leonard's Church Hall, in Glebe Way, Chesham Bois, was broken into by thieves who forced their way through a back window.
Once inside the offenders forced a number of cupboards open before stealing a CD player and cash from a pay phone.
The following evening there was an attempted break-in at the Methodist Church, in Bellingdon Road.
Peter Flory, St Leonard's Church manager, said: "It is just so sad that society can stoop so low. We came in on Sunday for our regular service and discovered we had been broken into.
"They couldn't find very much because we were broken into last month and were being extra careful about what we keep here.
"But any cupboard with a padlock on they just ripped off. It is a real shame and when we told our parishioners on Sunday they were all shocked and saddened."
Churches have been a repeated target for thieves this year after the United Reformed Church, in The Broadway, had a laptop, cash, and a projector system stolen in February.
Later the same day at Christ Church, in Waterside, offenders broke a skylight and attempted to break into the church's ornbury - a locked box where sacraments are kept for emergency use including giving last rites.
Emmanuel Church, in Broad Street, was broken into in April and saw an overhead projector, CD player and LCD monitors stolen and Hivings Free Church, in Upper Belmont Road, had a laptop and power point projector stolen in a theft in July.
