Chesham conservation area 'safe'

CHILTERN District Council have insisted the conservation area in Chesham is safe despite it being placed on the English Heritage 'at risk' register last week.
Last Tuesday (23/6) Chesham town centre and old town were named in the first ever list of areas which were at risk of 'neglect, decay, and damaging change'.
All local authorities, including CDC, were sent questionnaires to complete about their conservation areas before the list was published.

Dr Simon Thurley, chief executive of English Heritage, said: "Analysing the results, it is clear that the problems fall into two main areas; what owners do to their properties and what councils do or fail to do to the streets, pavements, parks, and public spaces."
Accusations of negligence towards the conservation area in Chesham have been firmly denied by CDC.
A statement from the district council said: "It is considered that this Conservation Area was erroneously put on the register due to a misinterpretation by English Heritage of our questionnaire responses and in this is being discussed with English Heritage.
"Their report doesn't actually give a true picture of what the situation is in Chesham.
"We do as much as we can to preserve or enhance all of our 19 conservation areas using a variety of means including having specific planning policies."
English Heritage have appealed to council's to protect original details on listed buildings and to take better care of public areas and have urged residents to get more involved.
Mr Thurley added: "Millions of us live in, work in, pass through or visit conservation areas. They are the centres of historic towns and villages, 1930s suburbs, rural idylls or estates of industrial workers' cottages: the local heritage which gives England its distinctiveness.
"These are difficult economic times but our research shows that conservation areas do not need time-consuming or costly measures, just prioritising as places people cherish, the commitment of the whole council and good-management by residents and councils alike.
"Well-cared for they encourage good neighbourliness, give a boost to the local economy and will continue to be a source of national pride and joy for generations to come."
