Chesham could house brewery once again
BEER has not been brewed in Chesham for more than 50 years - but that could all be about to change.
Trowel Brewery Ltd, based in Bovingdon, have submitted a planning application to Chiltern District Council for a micro-brewery at Waterside Business Park.
It would be the first such facility in the town since 1957 when the Chesham and Brackley Brewery, in White Hill, shut down and later became the home of Waitrose.
The company is being set up by Dave Lewin and Liz Daughton and it was the brewing heritage of Chesham which inspired their application bid.
The pair have backgrounds in micro-biology and chemistry and hope to use those skills in their new career path.
Mr Lewin said: "Brewing in Chesham dates back to the 1700s and for 50 years the town has been void of a brewery and we feel that it is time for one to return.
"It has always been a hobby of ours and we are members of the Campaign for Real Ale for many years and have been fascinated in the science of brewing.
"It is a very exciting opportunity for us. We have been looking to get into the industry for a long time and this is the furthest down the line we have come so we are just hoping now that everything goes well."
If their bid is successful the company will be brewing cask conditioned and bottled real ales.
A decision on whether to grant a certificate of lawfulness to the premises to be used as a brewer will be made in July by the district council.
