Silver Surfer programme earmarked for award
A programme where youngsters helped teach older people IT skills earned the project a short-listing for an award.
The Silver Surfer training programme, which began in January, involved students dropping in on residents of Cromwell House sheltered accommodation to refresh their skills.
It was set up after Paradigm Housing Group was awarded a £9,000 grant from Virgin Media to pay for two computers, and the cost of a seven-week IT course.
Some of the 'silver surfers' also mentor the youngsters.
Participants in the project, among them members of Chesham Over 50s Positive Action Group, surfers, students and staff from Chesham High School attended the London award ceremony on March 11.
They were nominated for the best practice in the community award in the southern region, in the Tenant Participation Advisory Service's Connecting People Awards 2009.
On the night they were pipped to the post by a youth project in Haringey but made it down to the last five.
Silver surfer Pam Gomm, said: "It was a shame we didn't win, but being nominated was an honour."
