Hefty fine for fly-tipper
A man was prosecuted after dumping his cardboard boxes in a 'moment of madness'.
Paul Lloyd-Denyer, 19, of Treachers Close, Chesham, was ordered to pay a total of £1,315 after a court ruled waste was found illegally dumped at Green Lane, off Blackwell Hall Lane, Chesham, in August last year.
The court heard a hidden camera recorded a vehicle belonging to Lloyd-Denyer at the scene, which is often used for fly-tipping, on August 16.
Cardboard waste had been dumped in the lane.
Lloyd-Denyer was interviewed by Bucks County Council officers at Amersham Police Station. He told officers the waste had come from his home address and that he had intended to recycle it. He had been on his way for a night out with friends but in a "moment of madness" had dumped the cardboard boxes in Green Lane, the court heard.
Aylesbury Magistrates Court ordered the fine, prosecution costs and victim surcharge on March 10.
Chairman of the Waste Committee for Bucks Councillor Martin Tett said: "Fly tipping in our country lanes is completely unacceptable. It is dirty and dangerous. We will do everything within reason to catch and prosecute the anti-social people who do this. Why should everyone else have to pay to clean up their mess? Just because it's a quiet or remote location doesn't mean they will get away with it."
Illegal dumpers can be fined up to £50,000 or imprisoned for up to six months if convicted at Magistrates' Court. There is no limit on fines which can be imposed on a person found guilty at a Crown Court, which can also sentence up to five years in prison for the offence.
Chiltern District Councillor Mike Smith, cabinet member for environmental management, warned: "We are committed to taking action against fly-tipping and its causes. This case once more underlines the willingness of the authorities and the courts to take firm action in these circumstances."
