School children come together for Target Mars project
Pupils from half a dozen schools across south Bucks banded together to work on an imaginative project which encouraged qualities of lateral thinking.
Target Mars was the title of the science day which took place at Chesham Preparatory School in Orchard Leigh. Participating schools were Ley Hill, Hawridge and Cholesbury, Chartridge, Brushwood, and Chalfont St Giles Junior.
A total of 30 youngsters aged between nine and 10 took part. They were tasked to complete various assignments which included demonstrating a basic knowledge of micro-chemistry, building a robot, a wind turbine, and a buggy.
The pupils were asked, firstly, to design things on paper and then to use paper and cardboard to complete the tasks.
Teams of six were created with members from each school and each side was assigned the name of a country.
The winning side was Team India, showing an all-round competence and sense of fun as well as scientific knowledge.
Fiona Cumming, a science teacher at Chesham Preparatory School, said: "We asked a company called Aspire More Able to come in to school and run the day.
"It was a great success. Everyone had a fabulous time and all of the pupils demonstrated a capacity to think critically and independently."
Mrs Cumming said she hoped to arrange a similar function at the same time next year.
"It was an ideal thing for these gifted and talented science pupils to get their teeth into. They relished the competitive aspect of the day," she said.
