Raiders target Chesham shops
Thieves have been branded 'heartless' after a charity was among businesses raided in a spate of shop break-ins across Chesham.
Cash was stolen from the RSPCA shop in High Street after burglars forced their way in through the back door.
Area shops manager Josie Alleway criticised the thieves, who broke in last Tuesday night, and said the charity was considering stepping-up security all of its premises. She said: "I think they are heartless. A lot of people who work in the shops work for free and give their time for free.
Even if you are looking at £100 you work very hard to get that. The upsetting part is it's taking money away from the animals who need it.
"They damaged the back door so we will probably have to get a new door. We are a charity and can't afford elaborate security or anything high tech like some of the bigger shops can afford."
She added:" They obviously wanted the money and not anything else. It was only a small amount of cash - just the float."
Other businesses broken into overnight on February 14 were chocolatier Sophie's and Sundial Salon, both in Bulcher Street.
Joy Hammon, who works in Sophie's, said a window was smashed causing glass to shatter on stock. She said: "It's just upsetting, chocolate figures had to be thrown out because of the glass. We don't have money kept here at night because it's just not worth it. With Valentine's it could have been devastating. We were lucky I think."
Coins worth £30 were taken from Sundial Salon when a window was smashed on the same evening.
In December, 11 boilers, all of the same brand, were stolen from the shop, costing £800 to £1100 each, Mr Mason added.
The offices of the Examiner did not escape unscathed. Vandals smashed a front window in Germain Street, Chesham, overnight on Friday. No entry was gained to the premises.
In a separate incident Plumb Centre in Crown Industrial Estate was ram raided on Monday. Shop assistant Steve Mason said the incident was its fourth break-in in eight weeks, and caused damage estimated to be around £5,000 to £10,000. He said: "At about 9.50pm someone reversed a van into the front of the shop and caused lots of damage. We seem to be a target at the moment. We couldn't actually get in the next morning because they buckled the metal shutter."
He added: "There's a lot of our branches shutting down. If they carry on they might think lets shut this branch down."
Police issued advice to businesses to make sure doors and windows are securely locked and do not leave cash in tills overnight, leaving the till drawer open to show it is empty. Anyone with information should contact police on 08458 505 505 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
