Battle recession by scrapping parking charges
A Chesham businessman is calling on Chiltern District Council to drop parking charges to help the town survive the recession.
Greg Morgan, managing director of promotional products company Biblio Products Ltd, made the appeal to get behind visitors and employers after being given a parking ticket in a car park outside his office.
Mr Morgan, 43, whose company is based in Sills Yard, was issued with the £25 fine for exceeding the maximum three-hour stay in Star Yard car park, while he took a work conference call.
He said: "I was on a phonecall to Australia which I couldn't drop to run out and top up my parking. I am obviously guilty, hands up, but I am trying my best."
Mr Morgan, who has paid his fine, believes the parking charges should be dropped to encourage people to come to the town.
He said: "Why dissuade people from coming to Chesham by making them pay to park?Should the council not be inspiring local businesses, shoppers and visitors towards the High Street?"
"I think in the current economic climate the council should be doing all they can to help local businesses survive in Chesham."
His comments to the Examiner follow closures of businesses in High Street since the start of the year, including The Global Cafe Bar and gift shop Curious.
Chiltern District Council spokesman Rachel Prance said: "The council has recently considered car parking charges and decided not to increase them in any of our surface car parks in Chesham. The revenues received from our car parks cover the costs of running and maintaining the car parks and any surplus goes towards maintaining the services the council provides and keeping council tax down.
"The main car park in Chesham - Star Yard - has a maximum stay of three hours to encourage turnover - the availability of short stay parking contributes to the vitality and viability of town centres - however to ensure that the short stay period is observed and turnover achieved, enforcement is necessary."
She added: "We also held our annual business meeting on November 20 last year and had over 100 people attend to find out what practical measures CDC can take to support small business."
Among the current services the council offers to businesses are support with waste, licensing, planning and health and safety.
