Headteacher Maureen Edwards bid farewell to her children at the end of the Christmas term.
Mrs Edwards, 64, received messages of good luck and gifts from her pupils at Little Spring School, on her last day before retirement on December 19.
"It's has been quite an uplifting experience teaching in this area. I really like the community, I think the community are very appreciative of everything you do for them. I didn't really intend to stay for 18 years in Chesham, it's one of those places that sucks you in and I really enjoyed the work" said Mrs Edwards.
She joined the new school in Greenway as its headteacher in 2001, after previously being head of one of its merger schools, Greenway Infant School.
The job has seen many changes during her time in the area. She said: "I think the role has changed because you are expected to know a lot more about finance and become skilled in working with multi agencies such as social services and the health service. The job is much more varied and the level of expertise you are expected to have has greatly improved.
"I think the education system which we offer to children now is far superior than when I started teaching, such as the cirriculum."
Mrs Edwards, of Hughenden Valley, previously held roles as deputy and acting headteacher at Holtspur School, Beaconsfield, and taught at a school in Langely.
She made the decision to retire after having seen a year group from start to completion at the new school, and currently has no plans for her retirement except to enjoy the Christmas period.
Mrs Edwards added: "I think it's a nice time of year to go. It's a mixed emotion. I found it quite strange on the last morning driving in thinking it's the last time I am opening the gate but it's the natural course of events. I feel I got the school up and running and now someone else can come in and take it to greater heights."
New headteacher Mary Paton will take over the role when the children go back to school in in January.
