Chesham Bridleways victory

22507998 Bridleways.jpgAfter a hard-fought five year battle, an inspector has ruled this week the bridleways of Chesham will remain free of motor-vehicles.
In 2003 a member of the Trail Riders Fellowship applied for orders to turn Bottom Lane, Trapp's Lane and Bunns Lane in Chesham into Byways Open to All Traffic.
Although Buckinghamshire County Council turned down the orders, it was overruled by the Secretary of State and the council was forced to make the orders.

But residents refused to give up and were vindicated at a public inquiry at the beginning of December.
By this time the TRF refused to provide any evidence because the initial applicant had left the area, although this did not mean the orders would have been automatically refused.
While there was a strong feeling against the orders, the only consideration by an inspector was the historical right to public vehicular access.
Action for the Bridleways of Chesham spent hours proving the routes had only been used by walkers and riders and has been credited with saving the bridleways.
This week the group said: "It has been a long haul but we feel the just result has been arrived at in the end. What has been demonstrated is that the community acting together can achieve great benefits."
The decision has not just been welcomed by walkers and rider, but by Chesham High School, which uses it as a cross country course.
Antonia Thoday, a teacher at the school who also runs the pony club, said: "One of the things I think has been great is the range of people who have got together to research and make sure we did everything we could to keep the area so everyone can enjoy it."
Councillor Justine Fulford, a member of ABC said: "It is really quite emotional because everyone has put so much into it.
"We achieved what we set out to achieve and they listened to the users of the lanes and the local people."
ABC is concerned the quad bikers who have been using the lanes will continue to do so and urge people to contact the police or Chiltern District Council if they see any illegal use.

We'd like to hear from you.

I like to ride my motorcycle in this area, how can i enjoy it when you have made it illegal for me to ride in the area?

It has always been illegal to use motorised vehicles on footpaths and bridleways that are not BOATS! The fact that the TRF didn't even bother to turn up to the Public Inquiry proves that they knew that there were no historical motorised vehicle rites on these 3 lanes.
