Missing chickens
A pair of eco-enthusiasts trying to live a sustainable lifestyle have discovered their chickens missing and allotment plot vandalised.
Friends Julia Brammer and Holly Allen were 'devastated' to find their six hens gone on Monday.
The two allotment holders have warned other owners to be alert to vandals in Chesham.
Ms Brammer, of Waterside, Chesham, said: "We were devastated. We had put a lot of time, money and effort in. We had the chickens for about two months. They were part of a sustainable lifestyle, to grow the produce we have such as vegetables and the eggs. It was about keeping food local and knowing where it came from.
"Our chickens weren't a rare breed. They looked like them because they are all different colours but they are cross chickens. They might have taken them because they thought they were worth something but they are not."
Ms Allen locked the chickens away in the hen house the pair share on Duke of Bedford Trust allotments, off Millfields, on Sunday evening at around 5pm. The following morning Mrs Brammer discovered a scene of destruction and the chickens and their galvanized metal feeder had disappeared.
Ms Brammer, who was one of the founders of the 'Plastic Bag Free Chesham' campaign launched last year, added: "We want to warn other poultry owners that this is happening for them to be on the alert and to protect their chickens as much as possible. My suspicion is they have been stolen to sell on."
Thames Valley Police spokesman Carley Sparrow said: "There has been one other incident in the past couple of months where two chickens were taken from the other side of Chesham. They were the only two incidents in the whole year so it's not a particular problem."
If anyone has information about the incident contact Sergeant James Benfield on 08458 505 505.
