Obituary: Jack Mash
by Martyn Pritchard
CHESHAM Cricket Club was this week mourning the loss of its longterm president Jack Mash.
Mr Mash, who served the Meadow club over many years, was - variously - captain, president, and backroom stalwart.
He was, said current chairman, Jonathan Royals, a wonderful club man - "And someone who was very kind to me, personally."
Mr Mash, who died last week, aged 95, also sustained many longterm friendships during his cricketing years in Chesham. Geoffrey Reynolds, a vice president of Chesham Cricket Club, forged a friendship with Mr Mash which dates back to the 1950s.
"Jack became a first eleven player after moving from Chesham Bois," he said. "He soon became captain and then followed a golden age at Chesham Cricket Club.
"At one time Chesham supplied seven players for the Bucks county side for a match at Chesham. Jack's forte lay not so much on the cricket field, but with the running of the club.
"His enthusiasm for Chesham was boundless even to the extent of sweeping the floor of the pavilion before a match.
"Jack was a great servant of Chesham Cricket Club whose members will never forget Jack's generosity."
A businessman, Mr Mash was also involved with the Chesham Sports Company Limited, which owns the freehold of the Meadow.
A member of Chesham Cricket Club for 80 years, Mr Mash was described by Mr Royals as a "lynchpin, a hugely influential figure".
He (Mash) was instrumental in the building of the previous clubhouse at the cricket ground, in 1963. The clubhouse was opened by the late Fred Truman, the former England fast bowler.
A funeral service will be held for the late Mr Mash on Friday, August 29 at the Chilterns Crematorium, Amersham, at 11.30am.
